The Ultimate In-Home Newborn Session Walkthrough

in-home newborn session guide

You have so many things to think about towards the end of your pregnancy, and one of the big ones is choosing a newborn photographer! My main goal for all of my newborn sessions is for you to feel relaxed and as prepared as possible. If you have come here looking for a newborn photographer in Richmond VA, then you have come to the right place! I will let you know all the steps of a newborn session with me in the ultimate in-home newborn session walkthrough.

How To Prepare Before Your Newborn Session

Before your session we will have been talking and planning a ton. I like to create a mood board together so we are both on the same page. We can talk about which rooms in your house to use, the best time for lighting, and you also get a session guide with a ton of tips. I am at your disposal as far as help goes. Ask me anything. You will also have a quick questionnaire to fill out so I can learn more about your family before I even get to your home. The biggest prep step is to have baby fed or finishing up as I arrive.

What Happens When I Get To Your House?

There is no need to rush when I get to your house. We won’t start right away. I will walk around and check out the rooms you want to use. While I get my gear ready, we will talk and you can finish getting baby ready. It’s okay if you are finishing up feeding or changing your baby, we aren’t in a rush. If you have pets, now would be a great time for me to meet them so they get less excited throughout your session. I can help you rearrange furniture if we need to do that. You don’t need to have a spotless house for this to work. The magic of angles will seriously impress you.

Flow Of Your In-Home Newborn Session

We start off your session with the whole family. Especially if there are siblings, they can get their part over with in the beginning. Then we break off into the separate groupings we will have previously talked through. The most common ones are baby and mom then baby and dad individually. We break it up even more if there are siblings and pets involved. Usually at this point, baby has an outfit change. Then we move into the photos of just your baby. That will involve lots of soothing from Mom and Dad, so feel free to jump in whenever it is necessary. Then at the end we usually move back into some group photos now that everyone is more comfortable in front of the camera. If baby needs a food break, we can take photos of that too. Your baby is the one who is really in charge of the scheduling. We go with what they need at the moment!

FAQ’s

Do you bring props? – No, and I do that for a reason. I want these photos to reflect what your life is actually like right now. I want you to be able to look back at the photos and have them transport you right back to your memories of having a newborn. Using your own baby clothes is a big part of that.

How long do sessions last? – They last from 60 to 90 minutes depending on the package you booked. I want you to have enough time, but not so much that it feels overwhelming!

What if my house isn’t big enough? – Some of my favorite sessions have happened in tiny houses! You would be surprised at how little space we need to get great photos.

What if baby isn’t born on our session date? – Reschedules are a part of newborn sessions. We schedule a tentative date based on your due date, but it is totally fine if that changes!

TBP Newborn Session Packages Explained

I offer 60 and 90 minute sessions that are explained HERE. Both are plenty of time to have a relaxed session. If you have twins or a super large family, I always recommend the 90 minutes. We will use every ounce of that time. The more time we have the more relaxed your session can be.

If all of that sounds great, you can book your newborn session HERE!
