I’m sure we have all heard the “wet knot is harder to untie” advice when the weather is calling for rain on your big day. While that sentiment can be comforting, nobody wants rain on their wedding day, but it happens more than you would think! When you have to plan an event so far out, you need backup plans upon backup plans. You can absolutely still have the best day even if the weather doesn’t cooperate. Here are my top tips for a rainy wedding day!
Cute Umbrellas
Cute umbrellas really make or break your wedding portraits. Sure, you can always take your photos inside. BUT, these clear bubble umbrellas make it easy to include the outdoor parts of your venue in your photos. You can rent these from a bunch of different places if you want all your guests to have access to them. Or, if I am your wedding photographer, I have them for the bridal party in my car at all times! Even on sunny wedding days I have them in my car on the off chance there is a quick rain shower at some point of the day.
Have A Backup Plan
It is always a good idea to make sure you have a covered part of your venue to retreat to if needed. At this wedding we could just go right under the covered front entrance to the courthouse. Your venue heavily influences how you will go about this, but it is definitely something to ask your venue when you book them. Most places will have a backup plan already done for you, but it may involve you renting a tent.
Take Portraits Early
With rain comes clouds, which means it will get dark earlier than your original plan. That means you will probably have to come up with a rain plan with your photographer that involves taking your family/wedding portraits early.
Think About Your Hair
With rain sometimes comes wind. It will be easier on you to have your hair up if it’s going to be windy. That way you don’t have to worry about which way the wind is blowing or what way you need to be facing for your hair to be blowing out of your face. BUT if you feel really strongly about having your hair down, it is something your photographer should be able to work with. The ultimate goal is to have you feeling like yourself on your wedding day.
Lean Into It
Embrace your day for what it is! Your wedding day will be amazing no matter what the weather is. Instead of trying to hide the fact that it is raining in your photos, highlight it. Take detail shots of your rain boots, take photos with your umbrellas, and enjoy the unplanned moments. Your wedding day is important, but ultimately it’s just the beginning of your lives together!
