Carleigh and Nevin chose to do their engagement photos at their wedding venue! This is such a fun idea, and I find that it brings out more emotions throughout your engagement session. You can be physically standing where you are going to say your vows, and that will always bring up emotions! We dodged some thunderstorms by moving this session a little earlier in the day, but I think the grey sky added to the photo vibes. Keep reading for more tips from this The Mill At Fine Creek engagement session. I’ll go through some general tips for every engagement shoot, some specifics about The Mill, and why I find engagement sessions SO important. I even include complimentary engagement photoshoots in my wedding packages.
The Mill At Fine Creek is one of my absolute favorite locations to photograph! A huge plus to getting married there is being able to go back for photo sessions. Not only can you use the space for your engagement session, you can also go back and use it for family sessions, anniversary photos, or maternity sessions! There are limited days that these sessions can take place, and most of the time you would need to make a weekday work. But the option is still there!
If your wedding takes place in the fall, then you have the perfect excuse to also get spring photos done at The Mill! The venue looks SO different depending on what time of the year you choose. Carleigh and Nevin needed their session to be in early spring, and even though it is the same venue as we will be using later in the year, it has a totally different vibe. We leaned into the neutral colors and lack of leaves because in September everything will still be totally green! Think about when in the year you will need to send out your save the dates vs what season you want to take your engagement photos in to plan ahead. If you really want the same season as your wedding for your save the dates, you will have to plan out your engagement session/ book your wedding photographer pretty far out.
We were dealing with some unpredictable weather the day of Nevin and Carleigh’s engagement session. I have clear umbrellas that I keep in my car just in case. We did have to break them out for a little while during the session, but I LOVE the variety it added. A little rain during your engagement session, or even on your wedding day is totally fine as long as you plan ahead! One of the benefits of working with me is that I do all that planning and prep for you. I have plenty of ideas to get us out of the rain…or totally embrace the rain and get a little wet.
I think that engagement sessions are a hugely important part of wedding planning. It gives you the chance to work with your photographer ahead of your wedding. Nothing beats being familiar with someone who is going to be around you all day for your wedding. We get to practice different poses that we will do on your wedding day. That familiarity will make everything go smoother on your big day.
