You have so many decisions to make when you find out you are pregnant. I have 3 kids, I know how you feel! But one of the more important choices is your photographer. These photos will be new family heirlooms, so you need to make sure you LOVE the photos. Here are some tips for how to choose a newborn photographer, from a Richmond Va newborn photographer!
You are not only inviting someone into your home during an incredibly special time in your life, you are also inviting them in during an incredibly vulnerable time in your life. It is so important to make sure you like your photographer’s vibe! If you are comfortable with your newborn photographer then your session will inevitably be easier. During my newborn sessions I am a calming presence that makes everyone feel at ease. Making sure everyone feels loved and appreciated is just as important of a job as documenting your new baby. Finding someone who can accomplish both of those things is worth their weight in gold.
Another huge component to finding a photographer you love is their style. You have to think about the photos you are drawn to. Do you like photos of babies wrapped perfectly in front of a backdrop? Do you like lifestyle photos, but in a studio? Do you like photos taken in your own environment? There is no right or wrong answer here. It’s all personal preference. But check out Pinterest and make some boards. Then look at what you pinned and see what category it falls under. Most photographers will have their style listed right on their homepage, but also make sure to ask for some sample galleries to make sure their style meshes with your vision!
You don’t want just anybody handling your baby. A photographer with experience will not only put you at ease, but also know how to handle fussy babies, have a good workflow already down, and be able to roll with whatever punches get thrown their way. Safety courses are less necessary with lifestyle photos than the super posed ones since you are the one mainly holding your baby during an in-home session. But it is SO important to make sure your photographer knows how to pose babies safely.
Newborn photography is an investment. So much time and effort goes into planning newborn sessions, and finding someone willing to reschedule if needed is so necessary. You never know when your baby is going to decide they are ready to come into the world, and you want to get these photos done as close to them being brand new as possible. Babies grow SO fast, it is crazy! When I book newborn sessions, I book with the assumption that your session will be on a different date than we originally chose. We are on baby’s schedule. It is important that the photographer that you choose views scheduling the same way, because your baby’s birthday isn’t something you can control.
Alongside the flexibility comes the necessity for good communication between you and the photographer you choose. You are going to have questions about outfits etc, especially if this is your first baby. A photographer with a good session guide is so valuable. They will help you figure out the best timing for your session based on lighting in your home or baby’s schedule. My guide has TONS of tips from things I have learned from previous sessions. That way you don’t have to worry about having all the answers.
